The 5 Most Difficult Venue Types to Receive
It is relatively easy to take surveys in areas with ordinary, right-angled and standard lines. However, some structures push the limits of traditional measurement tools and standard techniques.
1. Historical and Registered Buildings
It is almost impossible to find a perfectly right angle (90°) in historical and monumental buildings. Due to ground settlements, axle shifts and bending in the carrier systems over the years, the walls have bent both vertically (plumb) and horizontally. Vaulted or domed ceilings, hand-carved wood details, and internally bent niches cannot be documented with precision with traditional tape measures.
2. Modern Interiors with Organic and Amorphous Forms
In modern spaces where parametric architecture or fluid design approach is applied, there is no fixed reference wall or perpendicular intersecting axes. Curvilinear glass facades, twisted wooden wall coverings and asymmetric column layouts cannot be transferred to the CAD environment with classical coordinate transfer.
3. Commercial Areas with High Ceilings and Intensive Plumbing
In high-ceilinged buildings such as HORECA, hotel lobbies, restaurants and shopping malls, there are huge installation pipes, ventilation ducts and electrical shafts at the upper levels of the suspended ceilings. It is difficult to reach these details without building scaffolding. If the overlap analysis of the installation lines is skipped during the survey, custom-made furniture will encounter unexpected obstacles when it arrives on site.
4. Lofts and Penthouses
Roof slopes intersecting at different angles, inclined columns and exposed roof trusses complicate the volumetric measurement in the space. If the variable angles at the wall and ceiling junction points are not determined correctly, serious gaps or non-fitting problems will occur in the fixed furniture placed in these areas.
5. Active Spaces Renovated
Existing coverings, suspended ceilings, thick baseboards and existing fixed elements hide the raw structure. Not being able to see the actual position of the reinforced concrete or steel element behind the coating causes the manufacturing allowance (tolerance) to be calculated incorrectly.
Critical Risks to Consider When Taking Surveys
A successful survey is not just about measuring the distance between two points. Details overlooked in the field lead to chain errors during the manufacturing phase.
Miter and Angle Deviations: Assuming corners are exactly 90 degrees is the most common mistake. If angle deviations are not calculated, cabinets and countertops with corner joints will not fit properly on the wall. To avoid this risk, diagonal measurements must be taken or digital protractors must be used.
Wall Unevenness: The different slopes of the walls at the lower, middle and upper levels prevent tall cabinets from leaning against the wall. Therefore, the measurement is not from a single height; It should be repeated separately from the floor, 1.50 meter level and ceiling junction.
Floor Screed Fluctuations: Level differences on the floor create incompatibility in furniture bases and legs, causing door leaves to rub against the floor. A fixed zero (referee) level should be determined in the space with a level or laser scale.
Plumbing and Shaft Misalignments: Axis shifts of electrical switches, sockets and water outlets cause the need for demolition in kitchen and bathroom units. All infrastructure outputs must be measured and coordinated with respect to the two closest fixed axles.
Tolerance and Manufacturing Margin: Construction tolerances in the field and CNC cutting precision in the factory are always in conflict. During the survey, the narrowest point of the space should always be taken as basis and a mounting bar allowance should be left.

It is very difficult to achieve 100% accuracy in complex structures with traditional tape measures. Today, 3D Laser Scanning and Scan-to-BIM technologies have completely changed surveying processes.
